Common questions

Everything you need to know

What is a HEIC file and why does my iPhone use it?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) has been the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11 (2017). Apple uses it because HEIC photos are about half the size of JPEGs at the same visual quality — meaning you can store roughly twice as many photos. The downside is that many apps, websites, and Windows computers don't natively support HEIC, which is why conversion is often needed.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
Never. This tool uses WebAssembly (libheif) running entirely inside your browser to decode HEIC files. Your photos are processed locally on your device and never sent to any server. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the converter will still work.
Which format should I convert to?
Choose JPG for maximum compatibility — it works everywhere: social media, email, WhatsApp, Windows, Android. Choose PNG if you need lossless quality (e.g. for printing or editing). Choose WebP for web use — it's about 30% smaller than JPG with the same quality. Choose PDF if you want to send photos as a document or print them.
How do I convert HEIC photos on my iPhone?
Open this page in Safari on your iPhone. Tap the upload area and select photos from your Camera Roll. The photos will be converted directly on your iPhone — no server, no data plan needed. Once converted, tap Download to save the JPG to your Photos app.
Can I stop my iPhone from taking HEIC photos?
Yes. Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency. This will make your iPhone take JPG photos instead. Note: existing HEIC photos are not affected, but all new photos will be saved as JPG.
Is there a file size or quantity limit?
There is no hard limit — you can convert as many HEIC files as you want, for free, with no account needed. The practical limit depends on your device's RAM. For very large batches (100+ photos), we recommend converting in groups of 20–30 for best performance.
